September 1983
“Re-Evangelizing Europe for Christ” was the theme of the First European Leaders’ Conference held in Rome, September 22-26, 1983. Sixty leaders from 18 countries hailed the event as “very successful”, “challenging”, and “most encouraging”. There was high appreciation for the 3 talks given by Cardinal Suenens, Padre Cantalamessa and Père René Laurentin, all of which provided profound theological insight into the fundamental orientation needed by leaders seeking to re-evangelize Europe. Simultaneous translations into 5 languages by a team of professionals, the enriching daily liturgy and prayer, and informative, frank and friendly sharing among the brethren, were some of the other elements which helped deepen the spirit of unity among the European leaders, thus making the conference seen by many as “an important seed sown for the future of Europe”.
